About Alicia Stella

Alicia has been visiting theme parks since the age of 3. She has an incredible knack for memorizing park maps, loves theme park renovations and cannot wait to ride something new. She can often be found taking video of construction sites in the Central Florida theme parks and riding roller coasters!

This_is_Where_I_Leave_You_Movie_PosterThe all-star cast does a good job of grounding this outrageous dramatic comedy whenever it starts to go off the rails. The story, based on a best-selling book, is pretty solid, but the film is made in such a by-the-numbers way that hardly anything is ever a surprise when it happens. This is most evident with Jason Bateman's character's story with his old flame being rekindled, which plays out like an old rom-com and hardly seems to fit the style of the rest of the film. The wacky family is entertaining and the cast hilarious, but the movie falls flat on its face too many times to count.

P1010519Project 340's construction continues at Islands of Adventure with the perimeter walls continuing to expand and more foundation being laid. Some new construction photos are below. It was recently announced that Tom Hiddleston will star in the Skull Island film, slated for release in November of 2016. Hiddleston is best known (and beloved by many) for his role as Loki in the Thor films and Avengers. Skull Island will apparently be a prequel, telling the story of King Kong before he is captured and brought to New York. It's rumored Hiddleston may play someone shipwrecked on the island filled with giant prehistoric beasts.

Tom_Hiddleston_LokiJordan Vogt-Roberts has been named as director of Skull Island, known for The Kings of Summer, and Max Borenstein is writing. He recently penned the screenplay for Godzilla, also released by Legendary. Legendary and Universal will be releasing the new Skull Island film together, (as well as Jurassic World next year). There has not yet been any official announcement for a King Kong ride at Islands of Adventure, but Diagon Alley at the old Jaws area of Universal Studios Florida wasn't announced for months into its construction. Only time will tell. ...continue reading

Concrete walls along Toon Lagoon and the backside of the Project 340 construction zone have started to appear. These walls may rise high enough to block the view of the hotel and road behind the area from guests. Since this area is pretty tight they may be covered in trees or rockwork to create a larger sense of space for Skull Island. Let's hope it looks better than the metal facade behind Dragon Challenge. ...continue reading

if_i_stay_movie_posterThis felt a bit too manipulative to be enjoyable. Chloe Grace Moretz gave an incredible performance, but it wasn't enough to save the film from its shortcomings. I enjoyed some of the editing technique, especially some montage work and flashbacks. It really had a life-flashing-before-your-eyes feel. Walking out of the theater I couldn't help but think about how unsuccessful this movie was compared to The Fault in Our Stars, which is another recent teen-tearjerker, but one that is built on a more solid foundation.

P1010429There were lots of people working on Project 340 at Islands of Adventure today. The weather was actually mild, for once, with a nice cool breeze. There were a couple surveying teams out and many folks working in large trenches dug out near the back of the lot. It was the most people I've seen on site at once so far. Below are some photos from today's visit. ...continue reading

kinopoisk.ruThis was a really cute film. Finally a believable romantic comedy filled with things that could actually happen in the real world. The chemistry between the two leads feels genuine and the romance happens subtly, which is a switch from the usual by the numbers rom-com. The film even throws in a couple twists to keep you on your toes. Most of comedy comes from quirky banter between the main characters and their best friends, but the film also has a few laugh out loud moments. And they don't even need to resort to gross-out potty humor to be hilarious. I rather enjoyed this mostly down-to-earth movie, and now I want to try a fool's gold sandwich.

P1010399Work on Project 340, which may or may not be Skull Island, over at Islands of Adventure is in full swing. New porta-potties have arrived, construction teams are congregating, and the area is bustling with activity. There's a lot going on and fast, especially for an unannounced expansion! Here are some photos from my most recent visit. ...continue reading

Into_the_Storm_Movie_PosterIf only the characters and plot were as well constructed as the special effects surrounding them. Computer generated tornadoes have come a long way since 1996's Twister, but other than the found-footage angle, this film doesn't offer us anything the 90's version didn't. Watching this film, I couldn't help but think of similarities between it and Jan de Bont's Twister. Sure, a film about storm chasers is going to easily be compared to its predecessor, but it specifically features new technology one of the main characters has waited his whole life to try out: for Twister it was the Dorothy II, designed to study the center of a tornado, and for this one there was the Titus, a heavily armed vehicle designed to study the center of a tornado. There were countless action-sequence setups that were similar throughout, and unsurprisingly the film's climax is about a gigantic F5 tornado, bigger than any seen before. Once the main characters are securely anchored to the ground they get to witness something miraculous, the center of the storm. We've seen this film before, only the previous incarnation had more heart, story, better acting, and a great score. Into the Storm is held back by its quasi-found footage style and its lack of moral footing. It sometimes comes off as a high-budget Sharknado, but that doesn't mean it isn't some fun disaster porn.

The Battery, with a budget of only $6,000, is a US indie genre film directed by Jeremy Gardner that became a wide success after having been picked up by an international sales agent after a screening at a small festival in France. The film has since been sold to all the major territories. The film makers will discuss their production process, from financing to sales, the problems they encountered during filming and postproduction, the do's and dont's in distribution and how the festivals helped their film to get established.
