Bridesmaids is really funny, and sweet too. As nice as it is to see a film written by women and from a female point of view, the story is missing some pieces here and there. This is the first major motion picture written by Kristen Wiig (SNL) and Annie Mumolo (The Groundlings comedy troupe). For a first script it's fantastic, but for a big Hollywood release it feels a bit unpolished at places. In keeping with Judd Apatow's track record, this film is also about 20 minutes too long.
Much like There's Something About Mary or American Pie, this film has a few extended gross-out and embarrassingly awkward scenes throughout, where most of the audience went wild with laughter/gasps. Personally, I think the film could've done fine without them... if the story was a little better constructed, that is. They are laugh-out-loud funny scenes, but it feels like the writers are trying too hard to show that women can enjoy potty humor just as much (or even more-so) as men. It might have undercut some of the more sentimental moments.
What bugs me most is that entire sub-plots are introduced and revisited throughout, without any conclusion or payoff in the end. The heavyset British sibling roommates seem like they are in the film's trailer more than the actual movie. It would have been nice to see them pop back up at the end. Also, the main character is a baker and previously owned a small Bakery. They allude to this throughout the film, and she even bakes briefly at one point, but it's never wrapped up at the end. And was her mom going to AA meetings to prevent herself from becoming an alcoholic, or am I remembering that wrong? All of it was totally useless filler. The characters have stuff to do, but nothing seems to affect the film's inevitable outcome.
The casting was awesome though, and the actors are all really funny, with real chemistry between them. There are genuine heartfelt moments slipped in between the more over the top sequences. Kristen Wiig plays it cool, and her low key performance really ties the whole project together. If she was more animated or silly, like her SNL characters, none of this film would have worked. I wished Maya Rudolph had a bigger role, or at least some more memorable scenes. Was she pregnant during the filming? She kept standing behind house plants and wore a lot of dark clothing so I wouldn't be surprised if she was.
All in all it's a pretty funny movie with really funny people. This may be the beginning of a promising new writing career for Kristen Wiig and Annie Mumolo, as long as they focus more on story and less on diarrhea next time.
